About Unity in Edgewood
Now serving Edgewood,
Federal Way and other South Sound communities, Unity Church of
Christianity was incorporated in October, 1972 and was
originally located in Burien. Under the leadership of Rev.
Michael Murphy, the church met at the local Veterans Hall and
YMCA until 1976 when we purchased a large house in Federal
Way.
The building was renovated and fashioned into a house of
worship, and we stayed in the picturesque building until 1996,
at which time we sold our church, bought some land with
intentions to build a new church building. We held Sunday
worship services at Rainier View School in Federal Way, and
leased office/classroom space nearby in Federal Way. However,
with wet land designations and drainage problems, we were
forced to sell the property in 2000, and in January 2001 we
moved to Edgewood where we are currently leasing 7,000 sq. ft.
of wonderful, light space.
Other ministers who served our church include Les McClelland,
Dick Everetts, Tom Coates, Carl Stouffer and interim minister
Jim Peterson and Steve Colladay. Rev. Stephen Towles, our
current minister, has been with us since June, 2003. We are
proud of our history and celebrate the ministers and
congregation who richly bless our lives and our community.
Our Vision
Unity Church of
Christianity in Edgewood, Washington is an inspiring, Spirit
filled, happy place where people want to be. We work together
in harmony for the greater good of all. The energy and Sunday
teachings flow naturally into the daily lives of our
congregation helping them to experience greater joy, health
and prosperity. We have a diverse and affirming congregation.
Our adult education program supports people in gaining a
deeper understanding of the divine nature in everyone and
empowers people to serve. We are known as a dynamic community
that accepts all seekers of Truth. We celebrate our successes
and learning experiences with equal enthusiasm because we
recognize the value of risk taking and the need to learn and
grow on our spiritual journey. Our Sunday services are full,
averaging more than 140 per service. Our children are honored
as a part of our worship experience. Our classes are well
attended because they serve the needs of our congregation. We
encourage people to discover their gifts and to fulfill
themselves through greater service to their communities. We
are excited about life, eager to serve, and are seen as a
valuable asset to the communities from which we draw our
congregation and to our Global family.
Our Mission
To recognize, call forth,
and celebrate the divine in everyone.
Statement of Diversity
We believe that all people
are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the
importance of serving all people within the Unity family in
spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We strive for our
ministries, publications, and programs to reach out to all who
seek Unity support and spiritual growth. It is imperative that
our ministries and outreaches be free of discrimination on the
basis of race, color, gender, age, creed, religion, national
origin, ethnicity, physical disability, or sexual orientation.
Our sincere desire is to create a spiritually aware community
that is non-discriminatory and that supports diversity.
"Unity
is a link in the great educational movement inaugurated by
Jesus Christ. Our objective is to discern the truth in
Christianity and prove it. The truth that we teach is not new,
neither do we claim special revelations or discovery of new
religious principles. Our purpose is to help and teach mankind
to use and prove the eternal Truth taught by the Master."
-Charles Fillmore,
co-founder of Unity
Unity History & Philosophy
Unity was founded in 1889
by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, a couple who lived in Kansas
City, Missouri. Both of them had physical challenges. Myrtle
had a tubercular condition and had been given only a short
time to live, and Charles was in constant pain with a withered
leg caused by a childhood accident and inadequate medical
treatment. After a great deal of prayer, spiritual research,
and study of the religions of the world, they formulated a
philosophy based upon spiritual principles as taught by Jesus
Christ. They practiced these principles and found that they
worked; their lives were changed both physically and
spiritually. Others inquired about these principles, applied
them to their lives, and they, too, were helped. From a small
prayer group meeting in the Fillmore's home during the late
1880s, a movement began that has encircled the globe.

Unity Beliefs
...in a loving God. There is One Presence, and One
Power in the universe, God, the Good, Omnipotent. God, not
some human-like being far away, but a very real spiritual
presence that indwells us all. God is the Source, Creator, and
Sustainer of all. There is no other enduring power.
