Unity Beliefs
...in a loving God. There is One Presence, and One
Power in the universe, God, the Good, Omnipotent. God, not
some human-like being far away, but a very real spiritual
presence that indwells us all. God is the Source, Creator, and
Sustainer of all. There is no other enduring power.
...that our essence is spiritual and
we are innately good. Thoughts held in mind produce in
the outer after their kind." We are co-creators with God. And
we are responsible for our lives.
... in freedom for each person in
matters of faith. We are spiritual beings, having a
human experience.
..in the divinity of Jesus Christ.
And we believe in the divinity within every human being.
...the Bible reveals the spirit of
Truth. The bible is Unity's basic textbook. We accept
the bible as a body of history, a moral and ethical teaching,
and a great literary work. We do not believe that all passages
of scripture are equally significant, nor do we believe the
Bible is the inerrant Word of God. We find deep significance
in the Bible's inner, spiritual interpretation, which shows
the unfoldment of consciousness.
Unity is a practical way of life.
"...Unity puts forth its teachings as working premises to be
tested by actual use, and accepted on the basis of their
demonstrated effectiveness, rather than on blind faith."
"Unity is called Practical Christianity simply because the
Unity ideal is the actual practice of Jesus' teachings instead
of the religion of Jesus." ( Eric Butterworth, Quest for
Truth, p.71)
Unity is specifically Christian.
"We recognize the truth, beauty and goodness found in all
living religions yet find no peer for Jesus Christ, who opened
to common people the way of God, through the combined potency
of His life teachings. We teach that Jesus Christ is alive
today as an individualized Spiritual Presence, guiding
humanity to its divinity. He is our Elder Brother, Way Shower,
Lord and Teacher."
